Seller FAQs
Common questions from domain owners looking to list and sell.
How do I sell a domain name in New Zealand?
Self-list your domain and deal directly with buyers, or request broker support where we actively find buyers and negotiate for you.
What’s the difference between self-listing and broker-assisted sale?
Self-listing means you handle enquiries and negotiate directly. Broker-assisted sale means we actively source buyers, manage enquiries, and negotiate on your behalf.
Do you charge commission on every sale?
No. If you self-list and deal direct, there’s no commission — only a one-off listing fee. Commission applies only when we actively broker the sale.
How much is your brokerage commission?
Brokerage is 25% commission of the final sale price, and only applies when we actively broker and the domain sells.
What is the self-listing fee?
Self-listing uses a one-off listing fee. The exact fee depends on listing type. If you’re unsure, contact us and we’ll guide you.
How do you value a domain name?
Valuation considers demand, brandability, length, extension (.co.nz / .nz / .com), and comparable sales. If you want guidance, email support@domainbrokers.co.nz.
How should I price my domain?
Start with comparable sales and buyer intent. If you want a faster sale, price closer to market. If it’s premium, a higher price can work — but expect longer negotiation.
Can I list multiple domains?
Yes. You can list one or many domains. If you’re listing a portfolio, include any pricing ranges and priorities so we can guide the best approach.
What information should I provide when listing a domain?
Provide the domain name, your price or range, whether any assets are included (website, traffic, socials), and key value points (industry match, brandable, short, etc.).
Can I include a website, email accounts, or social handles in the sale?
Yes — just clearly state what’s included. Buyers value clarity (website files, hosting, email accounts, analytics access, and any social handles).
How long does it take to sell a domain?
It depends on the domain, pricing, and demand. Some sell quickly, while others take longer. Brokerage can help when active outreach is needed.
Can I switch from self-listing to brokerage later?
Yes. Many sellers start with self-listing and request brokerage later if they want active buyer sourcing or negotiation support.
What happens after I accept an offer?
Once terms are agreed, we guide the handover steps (payment method/escrow if used, authorisation codes, registrar change, and confirmation that the buyer has control).
How do you help prevent scams or unsafe transactions?
We recommend verified buyer details, clear written terms, and safe transfer steps. For higher-value domains, using an escrow-style payment process is often the safest option.
Can I remove or pause my listing?
Yes. If your domain sells elsewhere or you change your mind, contact us and we can remove or update the listing status.
Buyer FAQs
Questions from buyers who want to enquire, make an offer, and complete a transfer.
I want to buy a domain — what should I do first?
Browse listings or contact us with the domain you want and your budget range. We’ll guide the offer and transfer process.
How do I make an offer?
Send your offer and timeframe. For brokered deals, we can help structure the offer and negotiate with the seller.
Can I negotiate, or are prices fixed?
Some listings are fixed price and others allow offers. If you’re unsure, ask — we’ll clarify the seller’s preferred approach.
How do I know a domain is right for my business?
Consider brand fit, spelling/clarity, extension (.co.nz / .nz / .com), and whether the name could create confusion with existing brands.
Should I check trademarks before buying?
Yes. It’s wise to check relevant trademark registers and do basic brand due diligence before committing — especially for business-critical domains.
What payment options are available?
Payment method depends on the seller and the deal type. For higher-value domains, an escrow-style approach is often recommended for safety.
Do you help with domain transfers?
Yes. Transfers vary by registrar, but we guide common steps like authorisation codes and registrar changes to ensure a smooth handover.
How long does a domain transfer take?
It depends on the registrar and transfer type. Some complete quickly, others require verification. We’ll help you understand the expected timeline.
Can you help me acquire a domain that isn’t listed?
If you have a target domain, contact us with the name and your budget range. We can advise whether outreach is realistic and what next steps look like.
Will I receive proof of ownership after the sale?
Once the domain is transferred into your registrar account, you control it. We recommend confirming registrar access and the registrant details after transfer.
Can international buyers purchase NZ domains?
Often yes, but eligibility rules can vary by extension. If you’re overseas, contact us and we’ll advise the simplest path for transfer and ongoing management.
